Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna, mother of Nicholas II, the last tsar, found a second home in San Remo. Other Russian elite followed suit, and the Chiesa Russa Ortodossia was erected to fulfill their religious needs. The church was designed in 1906 by Alexei Shchusev, who later desigened Lenin's tomb.
