The main office for the Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre is located in Riomaggiore, near the central train station. Created in 1999, the area encompasses 3,860 ha (9,538 acres), including all five villages and their surroundings, and is a Unesco World Environmental and Cultural Heritage site. The park was established to aid in protecting the natural environment, including sealife and plant life, as well as the maintenance of the 1,000-year-old terraced hillsides, cultivated over centuries to create some of the finest vineyards in all of Italy.
